He was particularly good with weird food-based quips. To mark the completion of “Salammbô,” his epic (in the CB DeMille sense) costume drama, he suggested to the Goncourt brothers at a private reading-- which again involved a 10-hour bellowing at the top of his lungs--that “a special Oriental dinner" be served, with a menu of "human flesh, brain of bourgeois and tigress clitorises sautéed in rhinoceros butter."
I’d give almost anything to sit at that dinner with him.
Also, I remember reading Sentimental Education back in college and absolutely loving it. May be overlooked in Madame Bovary’s shadow but highly recommended.
Ten-hours of reading to his friends!!! I'm impressed with the friends. Love everything Flaubert despite how hard it would have been to be his friend. thanks for this.
Allez les bleus (de l'écriture) !
“Sometimes I think I’m liquefying like an old Camembert.” Gotta use this line more often.

Spectacular book. Give B&P a shot. Very current.
Instantly thought of the applicability to the current GOP, or GOOP (Gross Old Obstruction Party) stinking up the U.S.
A log of our politicians on all political sides have an old Camembert thing going on, and not in a good way.
What a shed!
Who you calling a shed?

Another merci mon vieux! I might be up for that book club - got a copy of B&P near to hand and but barely begun.
